Diplomatic sources say that President Nursultan Nazarbayev, the iron-fisted ruler of Kazakhstan, is insisting on the Prime Minister’s visit as a condition for allowing one of the largest military convoys in British history to cross his country.
Sources claim that Mr Cameron is being ‘bounced into’ making the visit, which they describe as ‘a form of blackmail’.
Mr Nazarbayev released a statement at the end of last month – which has only just reached the ears of No 10 – in which he announced: ‘The upcoming visit on part of Prime Minister David Cameron to Kazakhstan is important to us.
‘Co-operation in defence is developing. Our military are trained on military programme training in the UK.’
