People fly Kongming lanterns, also known as sky lanterns, to celebrate Mid-Autumn Festival in Pingxi in northern Taiwan, Sept 12, 2011. Kongming lanterns are paper lanterns traditionally found in some Asian cultures and always released during festivals such as the Chinese Mid-Autumn and Lantern festivals to pray for blessings. Pingxi town is well-known for its sky lanterns and its annual International Sky Lantern Festival near Lantern Festival.

Roaring waves surge forward along the Qiantang River in Haining, East China's Zhejiang province, Sept 12, 2011. The surging waves reached a height of 1.4 meters, creating a spectacular scene. Thousands of tourists rushed to the dike of Qiantang River to watch the magnificent tide, which usually occurs around the Mid-Autumn Festival (15th day of eighth lunar month). Local police will close some areas between Sept 14 and16, after some spectators were injured in August. 

The ashes of 19 officers and soldiers of the Chinese Expeditionary Force in World War II are escorted to a national martyr cemetery in Tengchong county, Southwest China's Yunnan province, Sept 13, 2011. The 19 officers and soldiers representing those who died in battle in the Myitkyina areas, Hsipaw and Lashio, finally returned to their motherland almost 70 years later. About 60,000 soldiers' remains of the Chinese Expeditionary Force are still left in Myanmar, according to a report from China News Service.

A huge red lantern is under construction in Tian'anmen Square in Beijing, Sept 14, 2011, to welcome the upcoming National Day, Oct 1. The lantern is 15 meters tall and has a diameter of 50 meters, and is scheduled to open to visitors on Sept 25.

Villagers get water from an underground water tunnel in the Nahong neighborhood of Yakou Village, Longlin County in Guangxi Zhuang autonomous region on Sept 15, 2011. The neighborhood has had no water supply since July, and villagers have to travel one hour to a water station two kilometers away to get water, twice every day. Residents who've been working outside the village all came back to pitch in during the drought, which has been the worst in the county in 50 years. A total of 164,000 local people were affected by the drought, and 64,000 people and 18,000 livestock are suffering from the drinking water shortage.

Poyang Lake's riverbed in East China's Jiangxi province is cracked and dry, Sept 15, 2011. The water level at Poyang Lake - China's largest freshwater lake - is experiencing severe drought conditions, declining at a rate of 10 to 20 centimeters per day and making the water surface contract to less than 1,000 square kilometers, far smaller than the annual average of 2,890 square kilometers during the same period.
